SOMOS ANNOUNCES
The 22nd Taos Storytelling Festival ~ October 9, 2021
Theme: Transformations
For the past twenty-one years, SOMOS (The Society of the Muse of the Southwest) has hosted The Taos Storytelling Festival which has become an annual mecca for storytellers and lovers of stories of all ages. This year, the 22nd Annual Taos Storytelling Festival is set to take place on October 9, 2021, and will once again feature national and internationally-renown tellers. The 2021 lineup includes Cisco Guevara, local storytelling legend, owner of Los Rios River Runners, and multigenerational New Mexican. He will be back with us for his eighteenth appearance with the Taos Storytelling Festival. Cisco draws his outrageously true stories from his Hispanic and Indian heritage, and from his dynamic experiences as a river guide over the last quarter century. Sarah Malone is a bilingual storyteller who has woven tales for children and adults for over 30 years. Through storytelling, Sarah breathes life into words – drawing the listener into another realm through the powerful relationship between storyteller and listener. She is a published author, recording artist, a founding member of Storytellers of New Mexico and its current treasurer. David McDonnell is a critically acclaimed author and storyteller(“seanchaí” in the words of the Irish) with a passion for Irish and Irish American history. His passion and storytelling skills have enchanted and educated both readers and listeners in both America and Ireland.
Jan Smith, SOMOS Executive Director says, “A good storyteller can weave you through the spectrum of emotions and create an image that returns months and years later; a line, metaphor, or moral that sticks with us – an intellectual anchor that we can draw upon. Being engaged with a fine storyteller is a workout for the soul, a bright mode of communication and connection in this our world. SOMOS has created an annual event that provides just this kind of outlet and opportunity.” Niall Williams author of, This is Happiness, History of the Rain, believes, “We are our stories. We tell them to stay alive or keep alive those who only live now in the telling.”
