Is there a mystic in you, a seeker longing to express potent insights? Using poems by Elizabeth Bishop, Mark Doty, Linda Gregg, Ellen Hinsey, Rilke, Rumi, Mark Strand, and others, this workshop is designed to celebrate and foster your individual spiritual expression through verse. In the wake of recent political events, many writers and readers have experienced a renewed sense of poetry's sacred power for consolation and truth-telling amid chaos. How have you looked for spiritual meaning, clarity, and revelation in your own work lately? Poets are encouraged to share original work (1-3 poems) that emphasizes epiphany, oneness, and the link between the human and the divine.
Cyrus Cassells has garnered a Lannan Literary Award, a Lambda Literary Award, the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams Award, and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His sixth and latest book, set in Charleston and the Sea Islands, is The Gospel according to Wild Indigo (SIU Press: 2018). He teaches at Texas State University and lives in Austin.
